Matt
Mills
The
Stallion Select Futurity is honored to have Matt Mills sitting
with us as an honorary board member. Co-Founder Steve Flaherty’s
son Patrick Flaherty has shown and competed with Matt, while
living in Arizona himself, and has been greatly impressed with
Matt’s skills and growth as a trainer. We have all watched
Matt excel in the arena. Matt’s business ethics and abilities
as a trainer make him a great asset to our team as well as to
the reining profession.
Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Matt began riding
horses at an early age. He had a very successful career as a
youth rider earning multiple championships throughout California
in a variety of disciplines including western pleasure, horsemanship
and trail.
In 1996 he switched his focus to reining. He qualified for the
AQHA Youth World in 1997, but never made it to Fort Worth. Instead,
the day after he graduated from high school, Matt headed to
Scottsdale, Arizona. He had accepted a summer internship with
top reining horse trainer Dell Hendricks. The summer internship
quickly turned into a job offer and Matt spent the next five
years as Dell’s assistant trainer.
In
early 2002 Matt established his own training operation in the
Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona area. In the fall of 2003 Matt moved
his training operation to Out West Stallion Station in the Rio
Verde area of Scottsdale. It is a state-of-the-art facility
that is fully equipped for training as well as breeding. Several
stallions stand at Out West each year including Easy Otie Whiz,
who was shown to several championships by Matt in 2005.
Matt coaches several successful non-pro and youth riders as
well as showing futurity and derby horses. Matt also starts
several two-year olds every year. A step-by-step article in
the March 2000 Performance Horse Magazine outlines his technique.
Matt has been identified in the reining horse industry as an
up and coming talent to be reckoned with. Matt's list of accomplishments
include the NRBC Intermediate Open Classic Championship. He
is an NRHA Intermediate Open Futurity Reserve Champion and the
Limited Open Champion at the National Reining Breeders Classic.
In 2002 he was on the USET Top 50 Riders List and in 2003 Matt
qualified a horse for the USET Futures championship in Gladstone,
New Jersey.
Through the years, Matt has consistently moved up in the reining
industry. This was readily evident in 2005, when Matt won the
Intermediate Open Championship at the NRBC, and was 3rd at the
NRHA Derby in the Intermediate Open. As of August 2005, Matt's
NRHA earnings are over $150,000.
